Namaste Montessori School will host a Community Garden Party on Sunday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Families are invited to celebrate May Day and help prepare the school garden for spring planting. Events include May Pole dancing, music, a dish to pass lunch and snacks, games, and a silent auction fundraiser.
We will also work on a variety of garden projects including spreading woodchips on pathways, weeding and turning plots, repairing fences and cold frames, and building a chicken coop. All are welcome to join us.

Eight Wednesdays, April 4 through May 23; 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Using mainly watercolors, artist Camille Doucet leads this hands-on workshop on landscape painting for adults. Sessions 1 through 4 will meet at the Johnson Museum and provide opportunities to work from the stunning views of the uppermost floors and of the new Japanese Garden. Those first four sessions will be inside. Sessions 5 through 8 will meet at the Plantations, where participants will paint en plein air, in the spacious outdoor landscapes of the F.R. Newman Arboretum. All ability levels are welcome. Along with watercolor materials, please feel free to bring any other media of your choice. A suggested materials list is available by request. Preregistration required no later than March 28.

Historic Quilts Unwrapped: Crazy Quilts
at The History Center in Tompkins County

The History Center will unveil the last and third scheduled batch of historic quilts on May 4, 2012. This time, The History Center will highlight "Crazy quilts" and silk quilts from the late 19th century. Quilts made of delicate fabrics, arranged in wild patterns and showing vibrant colors will be on display throughout the month of May.

Tompkins Quilters Guild members will keep doing live conservation work on historic quilts every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon in The History Center's main gallery to help better preserve these treasured textiles. They take quilts from their current storage space, photograph them, and document their history. The quilts are then re-housed in archival storage boxes to help conserve them.

The Tompkins County Quilters Guild was founded in 1974 to "promote, encourage, stimulate, and support quilters and quilting in Tompkins County and to provide education and fellowship for the members." In August 1976 they put on an extraordinary Bicentennial Finger Lakes Quilt Exhibit, the largest quilt show to that date in the nation, displaying 600 quilts from fourteen Finger Lakes counties. It was attended by over 8,000 visitors from all over the country. Other programs of the Guild include quilt raffles, annual participation in the Ithaca Festival, and exhibits. The most recent was a display in October 2011 at Tompkins Cortland Community College, including some from The History Center's collections.

The History Center is delighted to partner with the Tompkins County Quilters Guild to highlight some of the oldest quilts from the collection.

In collaboration with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Cornell Plantations is offering Sunday wildflower walks in Sapsucker Woods, and Friday morning bird walks in the Plantations. Walks are free and will be held rain or shine. Pre-registration is not required.

Ms. Eugenia Barnes will appraise quilts for the general public. Ms. Barnes is a nationally certified appraiser. She is one of the first 5 people certified in the US to appraise quilts and quilted items including quilted clothing. Clients will receive a written, certified appraisal. The fee is $35.00 for the first piece and $30.00 for each additional piece from same owner. Part of the proceeds from each appraisal will fund future programs at The History Center. Love Knows No Bounds and T-Burg Entertainment Center are pleased, thrilled, and, frankly, beside ourselves to announce the inaugural Hole in One For Homes, a charity mini-golf tournament to rebuild homes for flood victims in Owego!!!

Here's what you need to know to participate:

The History Center will unveil the last and third scheduled batch of historic quilts on May 4, 2012. This time, The History Center will highlight "Crazy quilts" and silk quilts from the late 19th century. Quilts made of delicate fabrics, arranged in wild patterns and showing vibrant colors will be on display throughout the month of May.

Tompkins Quilters Guild members will keep doing live conservation work on historic quilts every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon in The History Center's main gallery to help better preserve these treasured textiles. They take quilts from their current storage space, photograph them, and document their history. The quilts are then re-housed in archival storage boxes to help conserve them.

The Tompkins County Quilters Guild was founded in 1974 to "promote, encourage, stimulate, and support quilters and quilting in Tompkins County and to provide education and fellowship for the members." In August 1976 they put on an extraordinary Bicentennial Finger Lakes Quilt Exhibit, the largest quilt show to that date in the nation, displaying 600 quilts from fourteen Finger Lakes counties. It was attended by over 8,000 visitors from all over the country. Other programs of the Guild include quilt raffles, annual participation in the Ithaca Festival, and exhibits. The most recent was a display in October 2011 at Tompkins Cortland Community College, including some from The History Center's collections.

The History Center is delighted to partner with the Tompkins County Quilters Guild to highlight some of the oldest quilts from the collection.

Using mainly watercolors, artist Camille Doucet leads this hands-on workshop on landscape painting for adults. Sessions 1 through 4 will meet at the Johnson Museum and provide opportunities to work from the stunning views of the uppermost floors and of the new Japanese Garden. Those first four sessions will be inside. Sessions 5 through 8 will meet at the Plantations, where participants will paint en plein air, in the spacious outdoor landscapes of the F.R. Donna Faivre-Roberts: Wisdom of the Wood

The Gallery @ FOUND is pleased to present sculptor Donna Faivre-Roberts in a new show titled Wisdom of the Wood.

Ms. Faivre-Roberts’ figurative sculptures are a fusion of sand-worn wood and other natural objects with faces and other 'human' elements sculpted from clay. Her figures vary from whimsical and spiritual to dreamlike and surreal. After gathering, washing and sorting, the wood is rubbed with beeswax and orange oil. This is the moment when the true beauty of the wood is revealed and a figure begins to emerge.

Wisdom of the Wood opens on Wednesday, April 18th. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, April 19th from 5-7. Stop by to meet Donna, see the show and enjoy a little after-hours shopping. Refreshments will be served!!

The History Center will unveil the last and third scheduled batch of historic quilts on May 4, 2012. This time, The History Center will highlight "Crazy quilts" and silk quilts from the late 19th century. Quilts made of delicate fabrics, arranged in wild patterns and showing vibrant colors will be on display throughout the month of May.

Tompkins Quilters Guild members will keep doing live conservation work on historic quilts every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon in The History Center's main gallery to help better preserve these treasured textiles. They take quilts from their current storage space, photograph them, and document their history. The quilts are then re-housed in archival storage boxes to help conserve them.

The Tompkins County Quilters Guild was founded in 1974 to "promote, encourage, stimulate, and support quilters and quilting in Tompkins County and to provide education and fellowship for the members." In August 1976 they put on an extraordinary Bicentennial Finger Lakes Quilt Exhibit, the largest quilt show to that date in the nation, displaying 600 quilts from fourteen Finger Lakes counties. It was attended by over 8,000 visitors from all over the country. Other programs of the Guild include quilt raffles, annual participation in the Ithaca Festival, and exhibits. The most recent was a display in October 2011 at Tompkins Cortland Community College, including some from The History Center's collections.

The History Center is delighted to partner with the Tompkins County Quilters Guild to highlight some of the oldest quilts from the collection.

The Tompkins County Quilters Guild was founded in 1974 to "promote, encourage, stimulate, and support quilters and quilting in Tompkins County and to provide education and fellowship for the members." In August 1976 they put on an extraordinary Bicentennial Finger Lakes Quilt Exhibit, the largest quilt show to that date in the nation, displaying 600 quilts from fourteen Finger Lakes counties. It was attended by over 8,000 visitors from all over the country. Other programs of the Guild include quilt raffles, annual participation in the Ithaca Festival, and exhibits. The most recent was a display in October 2011 at Tompkins Cortland Community College, including some from The History Center's collections.

Using mainly watercolors, artist Camille Doucet leads this hands-on workshop on landscape painting for adults. Sessions 1 through 4 will meet at the Johnson Museum and provide opportunities to work from the stunning views of the uppermost floors and of the new Japanese Garden. Those first four sessions will be inside. Sessions 5 through 8 will meet at the Plantations, where participants will paint en plein air, in the spacious outdoor landscapes of the F.R. at The History Center in Tompkins County

The History Center will unveil the last and third scheduled batch of historic quilts on May 4, 2012. This time, The History Center will highlight "Crazy quilts" and silk quilts from the late 19th century. Quilts made of delicate fabrics, arranged in wild patterns and showing vibrant colors will be on display throughout the month of May.

Tompkins Quilters Guild members will keep doing live conservation work on historic quilts every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon in The History Center's main gallery to help better preserve these treasured textiles. They take quilts from their current storage space, photograph them, and document their history. The quilts are then re-housed in archival storage boxes to help conserve them.

The Tompkins County Quilters Guild was founded in 1974 to "promote, encourage, stimulate, and support quilters and quilting in Tompkins County and to provide education and fellowship for the members." In August 1976 they put on an extraordinary Bicentennial Finger Lakes Quilt Exhibit, the largest quilt show to that date in the nation, displaying 600 quilts from fourteen Finger Lakes counties. It was attended by over 8,000 visitors from all over the country. Other programs of the Guild include quilt raffles, annual participation in the Ithaca Festival, and exhibits. The most recent was a display in October 2011 at Tompkins Cortland Community College, including some from The History Center's collections.

The History Center is delighted to partner with the Tompkins County Quilters Guild to highlight some of the oldest quilts from the collection.

Speakers Sherry Thurston, a Peer Counselor at Finger Lakes Independence Center and local Community Member Joe Lee will tell their stories, focusing on their own experiences living with Changes in Vision, as well as their ability to continue to adapt to various changes and difficulties produced by vision problems, what resources they find helpful, and how they continue to cope on a day-to-day basis. Eight Wednesdays, April 4 through May 23; 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.

Using mainly watercolors, artist Camille Doucet leads this hands-on workshop on landscape painting for adults. Sessions 1 through 4 will meet at the Johnson Museum and provide opportunities to work from the stunning views of the uppermost floors and of the new Japanese Garden. Those first four sessions will be inside. Sessions 5 through 8 will meet at the Plantations, where participants will paint en plein air, in the spacious outdoor landscapes of the F.R. Newman Arboretum. All ability levels are welcome. Along with watercolor materials, please feel free to bring any other media of your choice. A suggested materials list is available by request. Preregistration required no later than March 28.
